Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions
Developed by UATUK in partnership with Pearson VUE. Unlike many university entrance tests, it focuses on critical thinking, problem-solving, and written reasoning, rather than any specific subject knowledge.
Purpose & Usage
- Designed to assess core academic aptitude—especially useful for UCL’s competitive
courses in Computer Science, Social Sciences, Management Science, and
Robotics, among others - UCL is the only confirmed university using TARA so far; however, Cambridge
University and possibly LSE may adopt it in the future
Who Needs to Take It?
For 2026 entry, UCL requires TARA for applicants to the following undergraduate courses:
Computer Science (BSc/MEng)- Mathematical Computation
- Robotics & Artificial Intelligence
- Management Science
- International / European Social & Political Studies
- Social Sciences (with or without Data Science)
- Sociology
Test Format
The TARA is composed of three compulsory modules, each 40 minutes long:
1. Critical Thinking – 22 multiple-choice questions
2. Problem Solving – 22 multiple-choice questions
3. Writing Task – One essay from a choice of three, word limit 750 words
Total test time is approximately 120 minutes
Scoring & Results
Sections 1 & 2 (Critical Thinking and Problem Solving) are each scored between 1.0
and 9.0, reported to one decimal place—similar to UAT’s TMUA and ESAT tests
- These scores are derived by converting raw marks (out of 22 per module) using
conversion tables that account for test difficulty and cohort performance - The Writing Task is not numerically scored. Instead, your essay response is sent
directly to universities for holistic evaluation alongside your application materials

Student Community Feedback
Some applicants have drawn parallels between the TSA and the TARA, noting that while the
TARA’s structure is still new, it may follow a similar form with reasoning-based modules and
essay writing. However, much of the detail is still emerging and students report limited
official information as of early 2025
Comparison Table: TARA vs TSA (Oxford)
Final Takeaways
1. TARA is brand new for the 2026 admissions cycle, mainly for UCL applicants to
specific disciplines.
2. It assesses reasoning and written communication, rather than subject content.
3. Register early and make sure your chosen course lists TARA as required.
4. Score is on a 1–9 scale, and the Writing Task helps showcase your ability to articulate
complex reasoning.
5. Preparation is vital—use official past materials once released, practise timed MCQs,
and write structured essays under discipline.
